Spotlight: Jessa Slade & Elle James!!
GIVEAWAY!!

Today we are so excited to bring you
Authors Jessa Slade and Elle James!!

Both of these authors write top-notch paranormal romance and are super sweet!! Ali and I had the chance to meet both of them in New Orleans during Authors After Dark 2012.

Jessa and Elle have written up a great guest post for us and they are hosting a giveaway for you all! :) Let's check out that post and then see what they have coming up next!

Smart, Strong, Sexy, Supernatural: Paranormal Romance Heroines

Romance readers love a hot, hard and headstrong hero, and so do romance writers! Creating a hero to fall in love with is one of the great joys of writing romance. Whether he’s boldly bald or lets his long locks flow, he’ll make you swoon. Whether he stalks the city streets or rules the wilderness, he’s the king of his world. In fact, sometimes it can be a little tricky coming up with the woman who can take on a man who is so…well, manly ;)

January’s two Harlequin Nocturne Cravings titles -- Elle James’ THE WITCH’S SEDUCTION and Jessa Slade’s A LITTLE NIGHT MUSE -- feature a couple of powerful heroines who are more than ready to take their man in hand…or whatever other part of his anatomy might come up!

Elle's thoughts:

In the “old days” when I first started reading romance, I snitched the Harlequin Romances from my mother’s stack of library books and spent my summers curled up somewhere escaping into a world of love and adventure. Back then, the heroes were strong, sometimes taciturn and hard to crack. The heroines were more on the virginal, helpless side. All I have to say is “We’ve come a long way, baby!”

Even though I read romances as a young girl, I grew up more of a tomboy, constantly on the move, never afraid to try the things the boys did, or to go on grand adventures. I don’t have much patience for women who think they can’t do things because they are too soft and feminine to lift a finger to help themselves. When I read and write, I want to escape into stories of strong women letting equally strong men into their lives because they have something to share: love.

Jessa’s thoughts:

Confession time! I ALWAYS write a little of myself into every heroine. I’m one of those people who can’t walk out of an action movie without believing that I am now capable of doing roundhouse kicks in slow-mo, so OF COURSE all my kick-ass romance heroines are me!… Uh, except for the part where I fall over if I try to wear stiletto heels. Also, I get a little shaky around too much blood. Plus (confession #2) I’ve never even touched a set of six-pack abs. (I know! Shameful. Not even for research! Can you imagine how the IRS would see THAT tax write-off?) Okay, so maybe I personally am not my heroines, but I like to think if I had to face demons or wicked faeries or hellhounds, I would totally step up to the plate. As long as I wasn’t wearing heels ;)

I like range. The heroine can be shy and reserved with the world, but I like to see her stand up to her man. There is a limit to the stubbornness that I can handle, however. When you need help, be you man or woman, ASK!

I would definitely be the kick ass ninja type. I'm bad that way! :-)

Susan W., as a shy librarian, no one would ever suspect you of being a secret ninja. Excellent disguise!

Maria, two librarians in a row :) I suspect that's why we all read paranormal romances; to get our kick-ass kick!

Jessa Slade said...

AquarianDancer, it can be sooo hard to ask for help. I guess we just need to get those characters into more trouble ;)

Meljprincess, woot! One for Team Ninja! You'll have to teach us the kick LOL

I'm more the shy librarian type so I relate to that kind of heroine more. Had my nose in books so much during high school I hardly noticed the boys. lol

Jessa, I am soooo with you about believing myself to be capable of all the kick-assitude after seeing a movie or reading a book. Perhaps, because of my age, I still have a want-both-sides bent. I want to be able to kick ass and save myself and my hero. BUT, I also want many opportunities where I don't have to lift a finger and the hero is treating me like a delicate princess and meeting my every desire.

It seems to me that too many books are either/or and I just want it all.

Happy New Year!

I Love different types of heroines because it keeps things interesting, besides every person can be a hero and every type of person deserves a chance to be.
As For myself, I would prefer to be a tough, kick ass kind of girl, but I live through each heroine I read about.

Raonaid Luckwell said...

Why not a blending of both? The shy librarian exterior would throw people off to be underestimated. Then when needed she could be the kick-ass ninja. Though I rather be a kick-ass celtic warrior type! LOL

Hello,

(You asked: Which kind of heroine do you like best? The kick-ass ninja? The shy librarian? Which kind of heroine would you like to BE?)

I'm thinking a combination of the following works best: strong, confident, smart, honest, a loving heart, and caring. I believe we all strive to be balanced. We must love ourself and hope we luck upon "THE ONE"....our soulmate! Too cool!!

Thanks for the opportunity to share!

Debra, boys weren't worth noticing in high school anyway! :)

Ingeborg, thanks for stopping by!

Maggie, I admit, in real life, I suffer a touch of "planned incompetence" when it comes to certain things I consider "a man's job." Like cooking ;)

Jessa Slade said...

Eva, yes! We're all the heroes of our own stories. An excellent reminder.

Raonaid, the Celts had some of the best jewelry, so I could totally go with your idea :)

Jean, that's why books are the great escape, right?

Jessa Slade said...

Carol L., right, we can all summon our inner butt-kicker when needed :)

Beautiful Disaster, instead of the kick-ass heroine, you can be the smart-ass heroine! Every team needs one of those too!

Laura T., a heroine for every mood :) Gotta love that about romances.

Jessa Slade said...

Mary P., yes, I love the truth in romances that there is someone right for all of us.

Jane, rock on!

Elaing8, my XY isn't a fan of when I'm channeling my inner ninja since he's usually on the receiving end of my -- shall we say -- exuberance :)

Jessa Slade said...

Books4me, yeah! Funny how those alpha males crumble in front of a good woman :)

Belinda, I agree. Balance is so important. Especially when you are trying to do a roundhouse kick!

Jeanette, ha! You got the punch and the quip. Perfect comic book superheroine :)

Jessa Slade said...

Bn100, smart and strong is a good combo :)

Debby, I wonder how many of us THINK we are librarian types, but would really be kick-ass when under the gun? Uh, not that I want to find out!

Arely, nope, sorry. With a cool name like yours, you're definitely a ninja :)

Timitra, another cool name! You and Arely are already the start of a superheroine team!

Texas Book Lover said...

It would be amazing to be a kick ass heroine but there is no way with my horrible knees I could do it. But hey its fantasy right!

It really depends on my mood which I like to read. Sometimes I want the sweet demure heroine others I want the tough, don't piss me off type. My only stipulation is neither can ever be whiny!

Ann S. said...

I always enjoy a heroine that can take care of herself. They stand on their own, but work together when necessary to get the job done. I wish I were more kick ass, but I will settle for reading about those who are.
