Today Simply Ali welcomes Author Jessa Slade to the Authors After Dark Birthday Bash!!

Take a look at Darkness Undone by Jessa Slade!

Darkness Undone

Marked Souls, Book 4

Paranormal Romance

March 6, 2012

The war between good and evil has raged for millennia, and as a powerful new enemy ascends, the Marked Souls are pushed to the ragged edge…

Sidney Westerbrook has always studied darkness and damnation from a sensible distance. Now, to earn his place as a league Bookkeeper, he must discover why Chicago is such a battleground of soul-linked warriors. But the research becomes personal when he finds himself over his head and under attack — and at the mercy of a waif with demon-lit eyes and a deep yearning in her heart.

Alyce Carver has been alone longer than she can remember, battered by the living nightmares that haunt her city. Cornered by yet another gang of demons, she unwittingly joins forces with a handsome scholar who can salvage her past, and she in turn may be the key to his investigations. But she won’t let him go until he shows her everything she’s been missing.

What begins as an experiment in possession becomes a trial by desire so powerful it threatens both their lives, even as it binds their souls.

Check out the first Chapter HERE

Ali: Is there an author that makes you go all “fangirl?”

Jessa: I just got to hear Charlaine Harris, Nalini Singh and Jeanine Frost speak at a workshop. Three vampire worlds, all three different, all three fabulous. THAT was a serious fangirl moment for me, as a writer and as a reader.

Ali: If you could co-write with another author who would it be and why?

Jessa: Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh, of The Lord of the Rings fame. I guess they aren’t technically authors, but screenwriting is sorta the same. If I was writing with them, it would mean they were turning my books into movies!

Ali: What are you looking forward to most about AADNola?

Jessa: Beignets! I fell in love with the sacks of powdered sugar and fried dough from CafĂ© du Monde the first time I visited New Orleans. I plan to make the trek daily from our hotel. I hope I can find people to walk with me. That’s the best part of AAD; hanging out with other book-minded folk, 24/7. We all seem less crazy when we’re together :)

Ali: The world is under attack and you are forced to run for your life. You only have room for one book in your survival kit, what book do you take?

Jessa: THE SWISS FAMILY ROBINSON. It’s a story written in 1812 about a Swiss family shipwrecked in the East Indies. Spoiler alert: There are no zombies. I read the book as a kid and was fascinated. As far as survival manuals go, it’s obviously a little dated, but the enduring power of the human spirit is inspiring.

Ali: Who are your favorite literary characters? (Yours or someone else’s)

Jessa: I feel a little slutty when I look at my bookshelves and see how many favorites I have :) How are you supposed to pick just a few? One character I always go back to, though, is Paul Muad’dib from Frank Herbert’s DUNE. It’s an amazing book, full of poetry and politics and grand passions, and the hero goes from boy to god. I would have given him a happier ending that didn’t involve morphing into a giant worm, but that’s just my romance writer side complaining.

Ali: Are there any of your secondary characters you would like to give more life to?

Jessa: The owner of The Mortal Coil, the night club where my characters go to blow off steam and dance a little, interests me. She has secrets she hasn’t shared, with the readers or with me.

Ali: If your friends were asked to describe you in one word what would it be?

Jessa: Weird. Friends say it lovingly, but enemies have said it too, so I guess it’s true.

:) Great interview. 'sexy flannel' I agree anything that my kids didn't spill something on is now considered sexy lol ;)

Joanne said...

Interesting interview. I love Jeanine Frost. I'm always cold, so even in the summer, I also wear that "sexy flannel".

Amy S. said...

Great interview! I've heard a lot about Firefly. I guess I need to watch it.

Fun interview! I would have a total fan girl moment with the same three authors - Harris, Singh and Frost! I have never heard of the drink BFK but it sounds fabulous just from the ingredients. I too enjoyed reading Frank Herbert's Dune. Thanks for the giveaway!

Wow, Jessa. I don't doubt you had a fangirl moment at that workshop. I would probably be struck dumb if any of those authors spoke to me. I wish I could have listened to them speak.

BN100, don't worry. I'll eat your share of the beignets :)

Miki, my mom keeps trying to replace my ratty favorite green sweater, but I refuse to let it go. It's my lucky booksigning sweater!

Desere, I live in the Pacific Northwest where we have lots of green, which is why I think I love it so.

Jessa Slade said...

Savannah, a good pattern on the flannel disguises many sins ;)

Joanne, my favorite flannel pjs (they say "Love Peace Joy," which seems appropriate for a romance writer) are so worn out, they are basically summer weight already LOL.

Amy, go now! Watch Firefly! It's always free on Hulu. You just have to wait for the episodes to go free in order.

Jessa Slade said...

Maria, real BFKs are made with coffee but naturally it's better with cocoa :)

Diane, thanks for stopping by!

Mareyeah, I've only been a babbling idiot a few times and the authors are always so gracious about it. I bet they have their squee moments too :)

Jessa Slade said...

Cynthia, I like this cover too. It's set it October in Chicago, which isn't often hot enough to require taking off your shirt, but who cares!

Stacie, the authors were so nice and funny and trying really hard not to spill the big secrets even though we begged.

Raonaid, I sometimes get to sit near Nalini at signings since our names are so close. And my books always get to sit near hers!

Sac402, and I'd love to have you read them. A match made in heaven.

DiDi, stack 'em higher!

Elaing8, hey you. Thanks for stopping by :)

Erin, a moment of silence for Cap'n Tight Pants...

Susan, you can do the (ahem) other stuff AFTER the BFK ;)

Vanessa, I think paranormal romance heroes are required by law to have sexy tattoos.

Jessa Slade said...

Brenda, I follow a version of Jane on Twitter just to read his Firefly quotes. Makes me happy.

Carol, happy drinking & reading!

Kog, sweet fried dough + Captain Reynolds = good night.

Chelsea, cheap & easy is fun :)

JoAnna, we will find each other again, no doubt. The books will bring us together!

Beignets are amazing. I would teleport myself to Cafe du Monde in NOLA right now if it was possible.

I also really enjoyed Firefly - I love Nathan Fillion, and the whole crew of actors on that show did such a great job.

Fun interview, and that cover? Oh la la!

Never heard of beignets so help me! They sound yummy though!

And Charlaine Harris and True Blood are yum! Dark chocolate too most definitely. *high five*

Jessa Slade said...

Marybelle, thanks for stopping by :)

Laura, some people say beignets are just donuts. I give them an incredulous look and say "They are donuts that come in their own bag of powdered sugar."

Mich, if we ran to NOLA and back we might ALMOST justify the caloric intake of beignets. Sigh.

Abby, you have just given me the idea of dark choco beignets. I shall suggest them to Cafe du Monde in August!

Stella, it occurs to me, I should contact the #AADNOLA early and have them stock the necessary ingredients. I mean, you can't go wrong with whipped cream at a rom reader con!
