I've sent out an e-mail, but, please check your 'spam' box just in case :)

My weekend....

*achoo* Yup, this is me sick... again, heh.

This past Sunday I volunteered for the Houston Chevron Marathon. I actually signed up to volunteer with a local radio station to cheer on the runners. Let me tell you, it was even better than I thought it would be :) I got my dad to help volunteer, too... and it was great to see him having fun.

Several years back, I actually ran the Houston Marathon. Let me tell you, when you're on mile nine and ready to quit it, those people cheering you on really do help and inspire.

One of the great things about the Houston Marathon is that the number bibs actually have your name on them, so we get to actually cheer on runners and call out their names. It really makes it special, I think.

Unfortunately, the weather on Sunday wasn't too kind for the marathon runners. It was rainy *boo*. Evidently, it wasn't so good for me either. All the yelling, cheering, cold, and rain got me sick before I even left downtown, eek.

I will say this... watching all those runners push on through really did inspire me. I now have my mind set to run the full marathon next year... *fingers crossed*

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Today, Monday (Yes, I know that's not on a weekend :)), I went into work as normal and my co-worker was there before I was, as usual. She seemed in good spirits as she didn't have a migraine (she's been having them frequently). Fourty-five minutes later, I was driving her to the emergency room. At thirty-eight years of age, it turns out my co-worker was having a heart-attack :( She ended up having bypass surgery. Doctors say that all went well and she is now recovering in ICU. If you get a chance, any prayers, good thoughts, or good vibes sent her way would be appreciated :)

Come and visit me...

Online, that is :)

Today, the fantabulous Brae Elliot (aka Brandy) has me featured on her blog today, B Renae Reads *yay*
I feel so special, hehe... let me bask in this happy moment, please :)

If you get a chance, please keep me company and stop by... Also, B Renae Reads is definitely a blog to keep bookmarked... besides the fact that it's so pretty and I just love the colors and background (it makes me want to redo mine, hehe)... she always has great posts about books, other blogs, and right now her Feature Fridays :)

I hope to see you there!

A New-To-Me Author: Laurie London... and a Giveaway...

***forgot to mention... Another reason I love Laurie London and Vicky Dreiling? They both offer Discussion Questions for their novels... As a book club organizer, that's a big help for me, hehe...

I really should write up these posts as soon as I think of them... I had so many things I wanted to say last night... instead, I fell asleep, lol. Oh well, I'll start from scratch :)
Ah, the joys of Twitter... I find out about so many new authors this way :) Not only from other readers, but the authors themselves.

This week, this is how I found out about author Laurie London. I saw that my friend @JoyfullyReviewd mentioned this new author (and also berating me for not telling her about new author, lol)... well, as usual when it comes to Joy, hilarity ensued, lol. Ooh, the surprising part? My new fave author Vicky Dreiling had already mentioned me to Laurie London... how cool is that? Okay, so I'm easy (no, not that way, lol). (Btw, there's still a chance to win a copy of Vicky's debut novel here)

As soon as I got a chance, I stopped by Ms. London's website and found out that her debut novel, Bonded by Blood, just released this month on the 18th from HQN! This novel is the first in her Sweetblood Novel series.

Check out this new novel and find out how you can win a copy at the end...

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Carolyn Jewel is an award winning author who's been writing stories ever since she could scribble. Now that she's grown up (mostly) she writes historical and paranormal romance because she loves history and imagining the lives of people who lived in years past, and because she's fascinated by the loves and travails of the not-exactly-human in any time period.

Five Fun Facts about Carolyn Jewel:

1. Carolyn has lived in, near or walked around all the locations used in her book. Except for St. Francis Woods, which she only drove around.

2. Even with the invention of the GPS, Carolyn's difficulty distinguishing left from right means she has been lost in every single city she has ever been in. Every. Single. One. (see #1 above)

3. When Carolyn lived in San Francisco, her apartment building was three blocks from Danielle Steel's house. One time she counted 10 cars at the house and there was room for more.

4. On her son's second Halloween, she made him a devil costume (cape, tail and horns, sewn by hand because she didn't own a sewing machine and if she did, it would probably be a disaster.) He did not like his devil horns so eventually she wore them herself.

5. Carolyn's favorite color is gray, and she has spent untold minutes wondering what's wrong with her that she doesn't like a feistier color better.

BLURB:

Tristan, the Duke of Shelbourne is a man with a mission: find a wife he can tolerate as long as they both shall live. No love is necessary—nor desired. And after a stolen kiss confirms Tristan’s desire, Tessa knows she has broken a matchmaker’s number one rule: never fall in love with the groom.

~*~*~*~*~

*squee* I'm so happy to say that Vicky Dreiling has taken the time to answer a few questions for us...

Ali: Vicky, welcome to Simply Ali and CONGRATULATIONS on your fabulous debut release of How to Marry a Duke! I'm so glad I got to meet you this past weekend during your book signing at Katy Budget Books :) You're so awesome and sweet, that even without the fact that I'm currently in the middle of and loving How to Marry a Duke, I'm already a fan for life ;)

Vicky Dreiling: Ali, thanks so much for stopping by my book signing at Katy Budget Books.  It was great getting to meet you in person!

Ali: I loved meeting Tristan in the first scene and watching the girls try to get his attention, lol... I think from there, I just feel harder for Tristan. Tristan makes a perfect hero and I just love him for Tessa. For you, what makes a great hero?

Vicky: I love drop-dead gorgeous rakes who have a dry sense of humor and are a bit cynical about life. As readers, we anticipate that these alpha heroes will undergo an extraordinary transformation during their journey with the heroine. At the same time, however, a hero must have  positive characteristics that demonstrate the hero has a core sense of honor. In HOW TO MARRY A DUKE, Tristan’s greatest strengths are his sense of duty and honor. But these same characteristics are also his greatest weaknesses. As his forbidden attraction for Tessa grows, he gradually realizes that there are shades of gray to the meaning of honor and that following his heart trumps duty.

Ali: What draws you to writing Historical Romance?

Vicky: I bought my first romance by accident in the supermarket. I saw a paperback with a beautiful cover and the words New York Times Bestseller emblazoned across the top. On a whim, I picked it up and tossed it into my basket. I didn’t know it was a romance until I got home and started reading. That book was Judith McNaught’s ALMOST HEAVEN. I couldn’t put the book down and have been hooked on historical romance ever since then.

Ali: I'm happy to see that you already have an upcoming release this July, How to Seduce a Scoundrel (I just LURVE this title, hehe)! Will this be in the same setting as How to Marry a Duke or will we be introduced to new characters?

Vicky: HOW TO SEDUCE A SCOUNDREL will be on the shelves in July 2011 and features two characters from HOW TO MARRY A DUKE. Tristan’s best friend and sister are the stars. Hawk, the charming rogue, reluctantly agrees to act as spunky Julianne’s unofficial guardian for the season. He’s certain she’ll pose no trouble at all. J  I love the cover!

Ali: Now for the question that makes my mouth water and has me headed to the nearest sweet shop... what's your favorite dessert? ;)

Vicky: I used to travel frequently to London for business and always ordered scones with clotted cream. Yum!
Ali: Vicky, thanks for taking the time out to answer some questions and many happy sales to you!
Vicky: Thank you so much for featuring HOW TO MARRY A DUKE on your blog!

THE HELLIONS OF HALSTEAD HALL

When a charming rogue proposes she marry him to meet her grandmother’s ultimatum, the Sharpe clan’s strong-willed sister makes a tempting counter-offer that preserves her inheritance and ignites his imagination.

Lady Minerva Sharpe has the perfect plan to thwart her grandmother’s demands: become engaged to a rogue! Surely Gran would rather release her inheritance than see her wed a scoundrel. And who better to play the part of Minerva’s would-be husband than wild barrister Giles Masters, the very inspiration for the handsome spy in the popular Gothic novels she writes? The memory of his passionate kiss on her nineteenth birthday has lingered in Minerva’s imagination, though she has no intention of really falling for such a rakehell, much less marrying him. Little does she know, he really is a covert government operative. When they team up to investigate the mystery behind her parents’ deaths, their fake betrothal leads to red-hot desire. Then Minerva discovers Giles’s secret double life, and he must use all the cunning tricks of his trade to find his way back into her heart.

Blog Tour Q&A and Giveaway: Sins of a Highland Devil by Sue-Ellen Welfonder

First installment in the magical new Highland Warriors series..

Sins of a Highland Devil
By: Sue-Ellen Welfonder
Available for purchase here
BLURB:

The first book in the Highland Warriors trilogy, in which three heroes make a pact to insure that a rival clan does not take over their Glen of Many Legends. At the same time, three women plot to marry these heroes to insure peace.

In SINS OF A HIGHLAND DEVIL, James Cameron is concerned when the King's decree states all three neighboring clans must have a battle to the death in order to lay official claim to the scared Glen of Many Legends. James attempts to make a pact with the heads of the other clans to fight this decree. But he ends up fighting his own fierce desire when coming head-to-head with Lady Catriona of the opposing MacDonald clan, who has her own plan for peace.

*~*~*~*~*

The lovely Sue-Ellen Welfonder took some time to answer a few questions... please help me to welcome Sue-Ellen! *bg*

Sue-EllenHi Ali and Everyone! Ali, thank you so much for having me here today. I appreciate the opportunity to celebrate this book’s release. You’ve asked some great questions, so let’s get started….

Ali: Sue, thank you for taking the time out to answer a few questions for us :) Congratulations on your latest release, Sins of a Highland Devil! Can you tell us a little more about your new Highland Warrior series and what it's about?

Sue-Ellen: My pleasure. Here is my own mini-blurb for Sins of a Highland Devil:

When a King commands three feuding clans to resolve their dispute with a trial by combat, a proud Highland warrior soon learns that he’s fighting for much more than his beloved glen and that his greatest triumph will be winning the love of his enemy’s sister.

And here is the official back cover blurb:

Three proud warriors locked in a struggle for victory.
Three beguiling women united in their vow to restore peace.

The king has ordered three clans to battle to the death: the one left standing will reign over the Glen of Many Legends. James Cameron, known throughout the Highlands as “The Devil,” leads his men with ruthless determination. He knows no weakness — until a headstrong, flame-haired beauty from a rival clan tempts him to abandon his ironclad loyalties.
Catriona MacDonald’s past encounters with James have proved that ladies who play with fire can get scorched. But her brush with this devil leaves her burning to feel his touch once more, even though the fierce warrior is her sworn enemy. Now “The Devil” must fight for his family, his honor, and his very life… even as he surrenders to his desire to possess Catriona at any cost.
***

My wish with Highland Warriors was to write three strong heroines of warring clans who come together to ensure a long-standing feud finally ends when they each vow to wed a man from an enemy clan.

I love heroines with backbone and heroes who are not just braw warriors, but also men of honor, pride, and a fierce love of land and heritage. Men and women who will defy any obstacle to protect kith and kin and hold onto the land that is as much as part of them as the air they breathe.

Ali: Now, can you tell readers about your *sigh* worthy hero, James Cameron? It's hard not to fall in love with him and want to take Catriona's place, hehe

Sue-Ellen: Thank you. I really fell in love with James during the writing of his story. He is everything I believe a Highland hero should be. He’s a proud clan chieftain who is known from the reliability of his word as much as the strength of his sword arm. When a king’s writ forces him to fight or see his people banished from the glen they love so fiercely, he has no choice but protect his people and his land by taking up his sword for a battle that could well leave him dead. He never expects to find an ally in the sister of his worst foe, but he does – and when they come together, James’s life is forever changed.

Ali: What draws you to write such wonderful and rugged Highland heroes?

Sue-Ellen: I’ve always loved Scotland and Highlanders. I have no interest to write any other setting or people. I’m of good Hebridean stock on my father’s side and have been visiting Scotland all my life. So I’ve always been drawn there. Because it is the home of my ancestors and also because Scotland (and the people) encapsulate everything I am love and am passionate about.

I feel a real affinity to the land and am awed anew each time I visit. I appreciate the history and culture, the strength, honor, and pride that defines Highland Scots, the magnificent sea-and-landscapes that are too beautiful to begin to describe, the myth, lore, and legend. How being there is like stepping straight into a many-paged history book – only everything is right there, still tangible in crumbling castle ruins and brochs and stone circles, medieval battle fields, and even in a swirl of thick, gray sea haar or a whiff of peat smoke on a chill autumn afternoon. So many things.

Highlanders, even today, represent all that rich history and heritage. They’re fiercely proud, fearless in a fight – always standing up for what they believe in – and they have a deep and abiding bond to the land that is everything to them. They’re honorable, hard-working, and never driven by ‘flash and frivol.’ I can’t imagine more admirable, noble people. I have no desire to write any other people or setting. It’s Scotland or nothing for me.

Ali: I know there are currently three books planned for this series, will there be more later on?

Sue-Ellen: Absolutely. I don’t wish to give spoilers, but I definitely have plans for more books in this series. I’m by no means ready to leave the Glen of Many Legends after one trilogy. But I will eventually return to my Kintail MacKenzies. I have plans for the four children of Sir M, a main secondary character in my MacKenzie series.

But I’ll be writing more Highland Warriors for a while, yes.

Ali: Now, before we finish... I must ask you one of my favorite questions... what's your favorite dessert?

Sue-Ellen: Great question. I love sweets, but if I must choose, it’s key lime pie. Being a native Floridian probably has something to do with my affection for this delicious sweet-yet-tart pie.
Thank you so much for having me here today. Good luck to everyone in the drawing! Readers can learn more about my books and also enjoy extra Highland Warrior content at my website: www.welfonder.com
Stop by to read a prequel for the new series and also to let James take you on a guided tour of the Glen of many Legends!
