Ali's Review: The Dragon's Choice

The Dragon's Choice

By: April Reid

Published by: Amber Heat

Length: A little foreplay, 53 pgs.

Ali's Report Card: A

Genre: Fantasy/Paranormal/Shapeshifter

Heat Index: XOX, Sweet and sensual

Shimmara d'Assana has been promised to the Dragon King since her childhood. She faces her duty with courage, knowing that resisting would only bring harm to those she loved. Protecting Shimmara from any dangers, until the night the Dragon King claims his bride, is her guard. A man she has hidden her desires and dreams from since they met a year ago. Now, with only one day left to herself, will she give into temptation?

Rion d'Vortimer has guarded Shimmara for the past year with a heavy heart, knowing the fate that awaits her at Dragonhead Peak. Over the course of that year, Rion's own desire for Shimmara has grown. So much so, that it's getting harder not to give in. Yet, if caught, they know that they must be willing to pay the penalty for having a bride lose her virginity. Either way, Rion has already started the plans to save Shimmara from the Dragon King, even if it means revealing his true self.

April Reid has created another world in her novella The Dragon's Choice. A world you can clearly see, smell and feel. Her writing will transport you to another time, another place. A place where dragons fly the sky and fairy-dragons live. Even with the length of this novella, April will bring you into her story of love, honor, courage, and, above all, sacrifice.

Shimmara is a strong female of character, willing to sacrifice her life to save those of her people. Just as Rion is willing to sacrifice his life to save that of Shimmara's. Knowing that he cannot let Shimmara die, Rion makes a decision, that while saving her, may cost him her love.

The heat between these two has been simmering for the past year, reaching it's boiling point on Shimmara's last day. Even with the consequences, Shimmara and Rion take the chance to be together and love each other. Their love scene is tender and warm as Rion takes his time in pleasing Shimmara.

This story will make you believe that love can conquer all.

I thoroughly enjoyed April Reid's novella, especially with the secondary characters I would love to one day read about again. You will instantly take a liking to Cherry, Shimmara's fairy-dragon, and King Cedric. I must recommend this book as a great fantasy read into another world.

Too bad, because I can't wait to read another one from this author :-) Until then, I'll have to content myself by reading one from her backlist.

Ali's Review: Colters' Woman

Colters' Woman

By: Maya Banks

Published by: Samhain Publishing

Length: Weekend read, 265 pgs. (Trust me, you don't want to be reading this in the middle of the night when you have to work the next day, lol)

Ali's Report Card: A++

Genre: Contemporary Romance, Menage

Heat Index: XXX

WARNING: You will want to have a box of kleenex close by!

Holly Bardwell is running scared and running tired. With nowhere to go, she finds herself in Colorado, right in front of Three Brothers Hunting Lodge, where Adam, Ethan and Ryan Colter reside. These three brothers don't just see a woman in need of help, they see their one. The one person they'll all three love, protect, cherish and the one to complete their family.

Holly doesn't know what to make of Adam, Ethan and Ryan. Trying to learn from her past she realizes that this time around she wants there to be no mistake or second guesses. Rising to the challenge, the Colter brothers set out to convince Holly she was made for them.

Yet Holly soon realizes that the one thing she wants, to be with them, may be what puts them all in jeopardy.

There is one word that came to mind when I finished reading Colters' Woman by Maya Banks, "Wow."

This is such a powerful read, more than just your average menage story. The spectrum of emotions you'll feel while reading this story will have you glued to every word. Maya has created such three dimensional characters, each brother different from the other. So it makes sense when each has a different approach to Holly. Adam, the older brother and a leader, Ethan, trusting and friendly, and finally Ryan, who's being haunted by his own ghost, react and interact with Holly in their own manner.

As for Holly, you can slowly see her growing into her own, from the scared woman who didn't seem to trust her own judgement to a stronger person, who was willing to do anything to protect the men she loved. The men who warmed both her heart and bed.

The sex scenes were steamy and vivid enough to get you hot. Holly not only has the pleasure of enjoying each man on their own but together as well. You'll feel the fire from the get go as there is no denying the attraction between Holly and the Colter brothers.

I can guarantee that Colters' Woman will be one story you will hate to see end and will definitely go back to time and time again. This is a story that stays with you long after you read the last line.

You can find out more about Maya and her books on her website, www.mayabanks.com . Also, join in on the chatter at Maya's new yahoo group at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mayabanks/ . Her next scheduled release will be Understood from Samhain Publishing on December 19, 2006. You can be sure that I'll be buying it as soon as it's available :-)
